Farm property in Hardinsburg, Indiana was acquired to restore hardwood forests and incorporate more wildlife habitats. Nearly 788 acres of diverse terrain offer woodlands, creeks, karst drainage, and rolling hills for habitat. Open field areas were planted with a mix of hardwood trees. Impressive biodiversity and natural generation of oak species have been noticed.
Our Efforts
  • Carefully monitor treatment areas, complete follow-up applications as needed. 
  • Continue to control invasive and/or undesirable vines through cut vine, basal bark, and frilling methods. Priority areas will be determined by the level of vines present. 
  • Maintain a woodland roadway network, nearly 25 miles of roadway through the woods is maintained throughout the year. This includes monitoring unauthorized atv activity, placing obstacles to block access as needed, installing additional no trespassing signage, and placing cameras for increased monitoring.

Research topics are focused on wildlife census & tracking, soil restoration, increasing the biodiversity of vertebrate & invertebrates, restoring habitats needed by declining species, stream & pond water characteristics, wildlife census, and soil restoration.
Our Efforts
  • Increase herbaceous plant biodiversity through managed environments limiting unwanted plant growth 
  • Expand woodlands through managed natural succession to improve the protection of watersheds
  • Reduce invasive species growing in open fields and habitat strips planted in 2008

Buck Creek Forest
This conservation effort has focused on reintroducing native trees in agricultural areas and improving mature hardwood stands. Little Indian Creek flows through this property and has three waterfall features, including a unique creek-island. Diverse terrain; rock bluffs, low lands, trailways, creeksides, and prairie-like spaces are improving wildlife habits. Nearly 230 acres of conservation land in this project area.
Our Efforts
Stewardship efforts focus on the following goals: 
  • Reduce the presence of invasive trees (mostly ailanthus & princess trees) in the southeastern bluffs along Buck Creek. 
  • Maintain gravel roadway by regrading, restoring water bars, and water drainage patterns as needed. Control unwanted vegetation growing on the roadway. 
  • Continue to monitor disruptive beaver activity.
